Coaches Guide - The Complete Soccer Guide
Back to Mental Guides

This is what you have all been waiting for. Finally, the coach's guide is here: my masterpiece. This guide will change the life of soccer coaches forever! This guide will have games to help your players have fun and learn, coaching strategies, how to motivate your team, and much more.

Coaching Tips

First of all, keep it fun for the players.

Make sure you are teaching to their age, which means don't have them do anything too hard for the age group you are teaching. If you don't teach to their age, it often leads to them getting confused, especially in games.

If they do something wrong, try teaching with the "sandwich approach". This means, tell them what they did right, then tell them what they did wrong and explain how to do it right, then provide additional encouragement and positive reinforcement.

Play lots of teaching games such as the ones shown later in this guide. This way they are having fun as they are learning, which leads to the players learning better, since they don't get bored.

Discuss the team and individual goals at the beginning of the season and refer to them often. For example, have fun, get better, get exercise, make new friends, and learn about soccer. Also, if you are coaching an older group it is a good idea to ask everyone where they want soccer to take them [high school, college, pro, etc.].

Encourage the team parents to cheer and offer encouragement during the games, but let the coaches coach and don't say anything negative or try to tell your child what to do.

Make sure that fun and player development are the top priorities; rather than winning. Winning is fine, of course, however, it certainly shouldn't be the top priority, even if you are at a high level where you could move down a division.

Teach good sportsmanship, whether they win or lose and always make sure they shake hands with the other players, coaches, and refs [no matter how mad you are at them]. Also, make sure you do the same, in order to set a good example.

Drills

Drills are a very important part of coaching so here is some very good ones to help your players improve and have fun.

Corner Kicks

Corner Ball- This is a simple drill that is fun and will help your players with corner kicks. First have everyone get in line to take a corner kick. Once they take a corner kick they run in and battle everyone else that has run in to score. And so on and so on.
