Some people might want to step up on a soccer team and become a leader. It is very important for every team to have a leader on it, or a few leaders because they help to provide higher work ethic and overall help to motivate the team when the coach can't. Here are some tips to help you become a better leader.

First off make sure you don't over due being a leader, remember you do have a coach.

Leaders don't need to say a lot. Most of the time they are there to motivate the team not get down on them. Usually getting down on someone is the coaches job. Be positive and say stuff such as We can get it back after giving up a goal.

However, if a player repeatedly does something wrong such as not pass the ball then the leader should be the one to step up and tell him to pass the ball.

Have your coach either pick a team captain, who is the leader, or allow the team to elect a captain. Also have one or two co-captains for when he gets subbed out. Also, note that picking a captain is for higher levels, usually start this at around 13 or when the team starts to play 11V11.

If you want to be a leader the best way to improve your ability is to practice it whether it be at school on a big project, work in a group, or on your soccer team. You will see that being a leader will be easy and eventually second nature with practice. There are also other ways such as leadership clubs and classes.

Being a leader is a tough job. It could be you your team looks to when down in a big game or the coach is unfair but you will find that is is also as rewarding as tough. Also, advice for a leader, coaches love them most of the time so make sure you show your leadership in tryouts.
